建築の歩みと歴史的変遷

議事堂の歴史は18世紀末に遡ります。1793年にウィリアム・ソーントンによる設計案が承認され、建設が始まりました。1800年には最初の入居が始まりましたが、その後も国家の規模拡大に合わせて増改築が繰り返されました。

象徴的なドームの完成

現在のドームは、南北戦争期の混乱の中でも建設が進められました。1861年のエイブラハム・リンカーン大統領の就任式当時、ドームはまだ未完成の状態でしたが、その後完成し、頂点には「自由の像(Statue of Freedom)」が据えられました。
