食のメカニズム日食と月食が起こる天文学的理由

夜空や昼間の太陽に起こる「」という現象は、宇宙における天体の完璧な整列によってもたらされます。天文学的に、3つの天体が一直線に並ぶ状態をシジジー(Syzygy)と呼びます。ある天体が別の天体の影に入ったり、あるいは観測者と天体の間に別の物体が入り込んで視界を遮ったりすることで、この神秘的な現象が発生します。

食の形態は大きく分けて2つあります。天体が完全に隠れることを掩蔽(えんぺい)、一部だけが隠れることを通過(つうか)と呼びます。また、小さな天体が大きな天体の背後に完全に隠れる現象は「深い食(deep eclipse)」として区別されます。

影の構造:本影・半影・擬本影

光を遮る物体が作る影には、濃淡による3つの領域が存在します。中心にある最も暗い部分を本影(Umbra)、その周囲にある光が部分的に遮られた領域を半影(Penumbra)、そして光源が遮蔽物より大きく見える場合に本影の先に現れる領域を擬本影(Antumbra)と呼びます。

地球の本影の円錐は非常に長く、月を完全に包み込むことができるため、皆既月食が起こります。興味深いことに、地球には大気があるため、太陽光の一部が屈折して本影内部に届きます。これが、皆既月食中の月が真っ暗にならず、かすかに赤銅色に輝く理由です。

日食のメカニズムと種類

月食のメカニズム

月食は、太陽・地球・月の順に並び、月が地球の影の中に入り込むことで起こります。地球の影の深さや月の位置によって、月が完全に影に入る皆既月食、一部が本影に入る部分月食、そして淡い半影のみに入る半影月食に分かれます。

なぜ毎月「食」が起こらないのか

もし地球の公転面と月の公転面が完全に一致していれば、毎月の新月に日食が、満月に月食が起こるはずです。しかし、実際には月の軌道面が地球の公転面に対して約5度傾いています。そのため、両方の面が交差する点(昇交点と降交点)付近に太陽がある時だけ、食が発生します。このタイミングを食の季節と呼び、およそ半年に一度訪れます。

宇宙に広がる「食」の現象

食は地球と月の間だけで起こる現象ではありません。太陽系内の他の場所でも頻繁に発生しています。

  • ガス惑星:木星や土星などの巨大惑星では、その衛星が惑星の影に入ったり、逆に太陽を遮ったりします。
  • 火星:2つの小さな衛星(フォボスとダイモス)が太陽を通過する現象が観測されています。
  • 内惑星:水星や金星には衛星がないため、惑星自体の食は起こりませんが、地球から見て太陽面を横切る惑星通過(Transit)が起こります。

さらに遠い宇宙では、2つの星が互いの周りを回る食連星(Eclipsing Binary)が存在します。例えばペルセウス座のアルゴル星は、暗い星が明るい星の前を横切ることで周期的に明るさが変化します。

歴史と記録

人類は古くから食を記録してきました。紀元前1223年のシリアの粘土板や、紀元前3340年とされるアイルランドの石碑など、古代の記録は現代の歴史的な年代測定に利用されています。中国では3,000年以上前から日食を記録しており、そのデータは地球の自転速度の変化を測定する貴重な資料となっています。

5世紀にはインドの天文学者アーリヤバタが、月や惑星は太陽光を反射して光っていること、そして食は影によって起こることを科学的に説明しました。
